The Importance of Sustainable Branding

Trendy logos make me so upset.

I know this might sound irrational to you, but when I’m off in Pinterest Land, or even just driving around my own neighborhood, when my eye catches a trendy logo, it really gets me going (you can ask my husband about that, he’s usually the one I complain to) Why? They look rad, modern, contemporary - don’t we want our brands to have those traits? OF COURSE WE DO.

However, the problem with trendy branding is that trends come and go. Sure, today they look cool, but what about in 3 months, when half of the competition also changed their branding to be ‘on-trend’? That brand is no longer looking so unique. And what about in a year, when that style looks dated and boring? At that point, a brand will most likely have to go back to the drawing board (or pay a designer again) and create a new logo/branding elements.

Trendy branding often is not created with the company values and vision in mind - it’s based on the style of the day. So even though it may catch someone’s eye, it won’t stay in their mind for long because the style feels generic - the customer doesn’t know what the brand stands for.

When creating a solid branding system, we are going for sustainability. Your branding should stand the test of time; the longer your branding is around, the more recognizable and memorable it will be. Which means customer trust and retention. Which means longevity. Which means more money for you!

Here are a few trendy logos I found on Google just now.

Will we remember anything about these companies?

To sum it up: Trends come and go quickly, and what is popular today may be outdated and irrelevant tomorrow. By creating a trendy brand, you risk losing the trust and loyalty of your audience when the trend fades away. It's important to focus on creating a brand that is authentic, unique, and timeless. By doing so, you can establish a strong and lasting connection with your audience, and build a brand that will continue to be relevant and successful for years to come.

At Midnight Grim, we are all about authenticity. So don’t come to us wanting a “basic bitch logo” (termed by a past client, who was referring to basically every other brand in her industry) - get ready to find you true mark!
